Welcome to Buckhurst Hill Tutor

Hello and welcome to Buckhurst Hill Tutor. My name is Martin and I offer 1 to 1 and group tuition to children from Year 2 to Year 6. I have a wealth of qualifications and experience as well as an Enhanced DBS.

Please note that I currently have no availability – instead, please visit chattymaths.co.uk

Credentials

  • 2002 – Primary Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) – Homerton College, Cambridge University
  • 1998 – Teacher of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) – Trinity College, London
You can verify my certificates and see reviews at First Tutors. Other references available on request.
  • Currently I am a part time Deputy Head at a school in Redbridge.
  • Primary Deputy Head Teacher since 2012 with an additional 2 years other senior leadership experience.
  • KS2 Type 1 SATs Marker
  • Qualified Teacher since 2001 with experience from Year 1 to Year 6: including 2 years overseas where I was a teacher trainer.

I have been privately tutoring children in the local area since 2016 and also teach online, currently through the National Tutoring Programme.

I have a DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) Enhanced Certificate. This is a criminal record check used for all people working with children for example in schools, youth services, the NHS and social services. It replaced the certificates provided by the Home Office’s CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) in 2012. This and the above qualifications I can show at our first lesson.

Tuition

My approach is professional, positive, friendly and patient – children need to enjoy what they are doing to benefit the most! As well as experience, I have a stock of resources and approaches to draw on and I will provide all resources.

For Mathematics and English I follow the English National Curriculum using the following techniques.

For mathematics I follow Singaporean methods which are increasingly popular in UK schools.

For writing I focus on writing for pleasure whilst ensuring technical accuracy (such as grammar and punctuation) and consideration of audience.

For reading I use the ‘reciprocal reading’ approach where we delve inside the meaning of a text to develop comprehension skills.

Sessions are normally 1 hour.

Specialist Tuition

Key Information

Face to face and online. Preference is given to Face to Face tuition as it works better than online teaching and would usually be from my home. For online sessions you would need a desktop, laptop or tablet with internet. A graphic tablet is also useful but not essential. The preferred tool is Zoom which is free to download.

One-to-one 1 hour KS2 Mathematics and English sessions are £40. Group sessions (up to 3 children) are £60.

One-to one 25 minute one to one sessions are £20 (including phonics). Group sessions (up to 3 children) are £30.

Originally from Manchester, I have lived in East/North East London since 2001. I live with my wife and young son in Buckhurst Hill. Currently, I work as an Education Consultant supporting schools in the north-east of London, work as a part time Deputy Head Teacher in Redbridge and run a number of websites to support schools nationally under the umbrella website PrimaryCollection.co.uk. I am a governor at a local school in Loughton and thoroughly enjoy tutoring!
